Special Collections
Each year CVSWMD holds a number of Special Collection Events to collect hazardous and other waste items that require special handling or are not usually accepted at depots in the district.
Our 2011 collection season was a huge success! This year, we served 1,192 households – a 70% increase in collection use over last year! With 11 events between the months of May and October, we visited 9 cities and towns in central Vermont to offer collection of hazardous wastes, electronics, textiles, books, tires and more. Because of Vermont’s newly E-Waste legislation, implemented on July 1, most electronics collections were offered for no fees. 542 households were first-time users, and 14 business and 17 municipalities and non-profits also benefitted from our collections this year.
In 2011 CVSWMD collected:
27,600 pounds (13.8 tons) of mixed oil-based paints and resins
29,800 pounds (14.9 tons) of general hazardous waste (including solvents, pesticides, corrosives, and flammables) 2,248 pounds of batteries for proper recycling and disposal.
13,260 pounds (6.6 tons) of latex paint (sent to CSWD to make Local Colors paint)
4,877 pounds (2.4 tons) of textiles16,453 pounds (8.2 tons) of books67,037 pounds (33.5 tons!) of electronics.
*Thanks to a VT Department of Agriculture Program we were able to accept pesticides, sugaring thermometers and mercury manometers free of charge.
**Through a product stewardship program we were also able to accept mercury thermostats free of charge.
