While we are hosting an infant/toddler car seat recycling collection on May 21 from 9 am - 1 pm at our Additional Recyclables Collection Center, you may have noticed that there hasn’t been a car seat recycling collection in Vermont for several years. This is because infant and toddler car seats, while comprised of several commonly recycled materials, are difficult to recycle as a whole unit. So we are asking you to dismantle your car seats for this event (we will help you), and here is why...
We can recycle the textile from the seat cover and seat belts; we can recycle the metal from the buckle, and we can even recycle the plastic seat. But we can’t put any of those materials into a regular recycling bin, and we can’t recycle them if they are combined. The plastic seat structure is considered a “bulky plastic” and can only be recycled at special collections such as this one. Recyclers cannot market the materials if they are not separated, and it is too labor intensive for one company to break down the car seats in the volume necessary to make it economically viable.
Don’t worry: the dismantling is a simple process and we are providing a special staffed stations at our Open House on May 21 to help with the process. Staff will be on hand to cut off the buckles and other parts, and to help separate out your materials. Children’s activities will be available nearby as well.
The car seat recycling collection is only one part of our Additional Recyclables Collection Center Open House. After you drop off your seats, tour the ARCC, find out what it’s all about, watch our compost truck demos, and enjoy some refreshments and free Kingdom Creamery Ice Cream (after 11:30 am).
