Garbage Disposal
Think about what you’re throwing away before you toss it in the can.
The following categories of materials sometimes end up in the garbage, but shouldn’t. Click on a category to learn how to properly handle such items.
In addition, there are materials that CANNOT be landfilled in Vermont. See the listing.
After you reduce, reuse, and recycle all you can, there may be some materials left over that you’ll need to dispose of. See the listing of Trash & Recycling Options in the Region for some of the regional drop-off locations, and see the list of Licensed Haulers serving CVSWMD member communities for pickup service options. Licensed haulers also must accept all items that are Mandatory Recyclables in the CVSWMD and most accept many more materials for recycling.
Garbage Costs: Where does the money go?
Prices vary for an average 25 pound/30 gallon bag of trash, but what the price must cover remains the same. Every hauler or facility needs to cover the same costs – collection; transportation; landfill/disposal costs; labor/staff including drivers and drop-off site attendants, equipment; the VT state tax; and a district surcharge which varies by solid waste district.
