A

Acrylic paint See also *Latex paint
Year round collected at the ARCC Barre, 476-1900 (oil paints and other architectural coverings are also accepted. See the entire list of paints accepted at the ARCC here).

Aerosols
  • Empty aerosol cans that DO NOT list the words “danger, hazard, warning or caution” like olive oil sprays may be recycled.  
  • Aerosol cans that are hazardous (paints, pesticides) and should go to a household hazardous waste collection. 

Air Conditioners - expect fees

Animals (dead)
There are several ways to dispose of dead animals.
  • Bury or compost the animal on your property. The State of Vermont has outlined a number of ways to dispose of dead animals in this guideline. Please review the three-page procedure before burying or disposing of animal carcasses. For details, contact the State of Vermont Solid Waste Management Program at (802) 828-1138.
  • Take the animal to a rendering company (only for large animals) or a veterinarian.
  • Contact your local game warden (for road-killed animals).
  • Double bag the animal and bring it to a SWAC Transfer Station or to a privately-operated transfer station. NOTE: Farmers needing to dispose of large quantities of dead animals should contact the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources: (802) 241-3465.  

Antifreeze
  • Antifreeze can be taken to a CVSWMD household hazardous waste collection. 
  • For businesses only:

Appliances – metals
If it is still in usable shape, contact ReSource at 477-7800
If no longer usable, many trash disposal sites have an area for metals. Also try:

Asbestos
Asbestos is a hazardous materials (both friable and non-friable) and must be handled and disposed of carefully. Contact the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources (802-863-7236, or toll-free in Vermont 800-439-8550) for a list of licensed asbestos abatement contractors or click here for how to select an asbestos contractor. Contact the Vermont Department of Health Lead and Asbestos Program (802-865-7784 or 800-439-8550) for assistance with health concerns about asbestos. Aseptic Containers (aka “tetrapack” and “milk or juice cartons” or “soy milk boxes”)
Recycling options are not currently available in Vermont, place in trash.
  • OR save them and ship them yourself to The Carton Council (shipping is not prepaid).

Ashes
  • A great fertilizer, especially in the spring. Spread on your lawn or garden.
  • Ashes also can go in the trash if they are cold. If not, they are a significant fire hazard.  Wet them down, or store in a metal can until they have cooled completely.
  • VT State Agency of Natural Resources has information on handling wood ashes.

Ballasts, PCB & non PCB
  • Bring it to the ARCC (fees apply).
  • Contact Barre Electric (476-0280) or Twin State Electric Supply (223-2488) to ask about recycling options.

Barbed wire (see wire)

Batteries, automotive/marine
  • Many auto parts stores, auto repair garages, and metal salvage yards will accept automotive batteries for recycling, and some may pay you for them. Contact the businesses you frequent and/or check the Yellow Pages for a listing of automotive service shops.  
  • Lead acid batteries are accepted at the ARCC.

Batteries, general
  • CVSWMD collects batteries at the ARCC.  
  • There are other collection locations throughout Vermont, click here for info about battery disposal in Central Vermont.
Please note: if saving batteries, tape both terminal ends. In storage, battery ends can rub together and heat up or spark, causing safety problems, unless taped or bagged individually.

Batteries, lead acid
  • Bring to the ARCC. Fees apply (included with ARCC fee).

Batteries, Rechargeable or Single Use  - Recyclable for free at many locations throughout the state, thanks to Vermont's Primary Battery Recycling Law, look here.  Rechargeable batteries can also go to the ARCC.  

Books
If still readable, donate to a used bookstore, thrift store or community rummage sale. Or bring any readable books, out of date non-fiction, text books, old law books or encyclopedias to the ARCC (fees apply).
  • Reuse – take to used bookstore, ask at hospitals, nursing homes etc. 
  • ReSource in Barre takes books for reuse – 477-7800 (one box per day).
  • Unusable paperbacks can go in regular recycling.
  • Moldy or wet books should be put into the trash.

Box Springs (and Mattresses)
  • ReSource Williston & Burlington locations can take mattresses and box springs that have no stains or rips. Call (802) 658-4143 
  • Non-reusable (ripped or stained) mattresses should be landfilled. Call CV Landfill for disposal options and fees (802) 479-2450
  • Box springs can also be dismantled and the textiles, wood, and springs can be recycled individually.

Target offers annual car seat collections, for recycling.

Cat Litter
If conventional clumping litter, it goes in the trash. If you use a natural plant-based litter, composting may be an option. Keep in mind when composting cat litter that it is easy to do, but should be kept separate from regular food-scrap based compost, and, when the composting process is complete, should be used on ornamentals only. Click here for an excellent article about how to get started. Compost cat litter for 12 - 18 months to be certain pathogens have been killed by the composting process.
 
Catalogs
  • Can go in recycling
  • Contact companies and ask to be removed from mailing list if unwanted. 
  • Go to Catalog Choice and register for the catalogs you do and don’t want to receive.
  • To remove your name from most national direct marketing lists, register online with the Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) Mail Preference Service.  OR, send a written request with your name and as it appears on all catalog labels and a $3 processing fee to: DMAchoice, Data & Marketing Association P.O. Clean Wood is banned from the landfill & can be accepted at certain locations in CV.

  • ​Clean wood includes all lumber or wood scraps that are NOT pressure treated or painted, and do NOT include adhesives or hardware (nails/screws, ok).  Remove all nails & screws (unless it's a pallet).
  • Branches, trunks, stumps, or trees larger than 1" diameter.

Clothing/Textiles
  • Bring REUSABLE clothing and textiles to the ARCC in Barre -- we cannot take shredded fiber or dirty/soiled materials.

Creosote & Soot
Creosote and soot (the bi-products of wood burning) are harmful and potentially hazardous in large quantities. Residential quantities of creosote or soot from cleaning out the stovepipe and chimney should be bagged and brought to the CV Landfill. Commercial quantities from chimney sweeps or larger facilities should bring to a hazardous waste collection. Follow this link for more on the toxicity of creosote. E-Waste

This category includes computers, all computer peripherals, and TVs. These materials are banned from the landfill, but they can be recycled for free in Vermont. 
  • Check out the Vermont E-Waste Recycling program for a recycling site near you.
  • Bring them to the ARCC. *Fees may apply if more than 7 devices​.

Eyeglasses
  • Used eyeglasses can be donated year-round through collection boxes located at offices of members of the American Optometric Association, Goodwill stores and Lens Crafters.  Call 800-74-SIGHT for collection information.

Fire extinguishers
  • Unwanted fire extinguishers - Vermont Fire Extinguisher – 476-6116. VFE also offers free extinguisher safety checks.
  • Bring them to the ARCC
  • Or call your local fire department

Fireworks/explosives/ammunition
Unwanted ammunition, road flares, and fireworks must be handled properly. Don’t put in the trash!  Please note:  These cannot be brought to a CVSWMD HHW collection.
  • Call the State Patrol Explosives Unit 802-244-8727 before moving explosives and shock-sensitive materials.  

Floppy Disks
Bring to the ARCC. Discs are recycled through floppydisk.com, contents will be deleted and cleared and discs will be refurbished and sold.

Flower Pots (see Plant Pots)
Plant or flower pots made of non-black plastic are recyclable.
Plant pots made of black plastic should be placed in the trash.

Fluorescent bulbs/lamps 
Fluorescent bulbs contain trace amounts of Mercury present in the white powder within the bulb.  To identify these bulbs look for the Hg symbol (elemental symbol for Mercury) or ​the word Mercury.  Through inhalation, ingestion and absorption through the skin Mercury can enter the body.  Mercury is a neurotoxin, harmful to the body.  Though one light bulb contains a small amount of Mercury proper methods for clean up are necessary to avoid exposure.  Follow this link to learn how to properly clean up broken bulbs for disposal.   • Find a collection site near you.
  • Bring to the ARCC. CFLs free; first 10 tubes are free; fees apply for other types.

Foil
  • Recycle clean foil and pie plates. 
  • Bring to the ARCC as scrap metal.
  • Food-soiled foil can be washed with soapy water and dried – then ball up for recycling. Balls must be at least 2" to go in blue bin.

Food Products/Scraps
  • Compost in your back yard. We can help you with plans, a soil saver or Green Cone.
  • Bring to the ARCC, fees apply
  • Find a food scrap drop off location
  • All transfer stations in Vermont are required by law to offer food scrap collection. There may be a fee.

Furniture (see Wood)
Used intact furniture can be donated to your local reuse or thrift store.

Gasoline and oil are banned from the landfill and must be treated as hazardous waste.
  • These are hazardous waste and must be brought to a seasonal Household Hazardous Waste Collection. 
  • To dispose of sooner, you can take to the Chittenden Environmental Depot, call ahead 802-863-0480

Gift Wrap (see wrapping paper)

Glassware and ceramics – non-recyclable
  • Ceramic items, drinking glasses, window/plate glass, mirrors etc. cannot currently be recycled in our area.
  • Unusable items should be place in the trash. ​
  • Glass from Construction & Demolition can be recycled at Myers Recycling Center, 655-4312
  • Broken items should be wrapped carefully to protect your hauler.
  • Reusable glassware and ceramics - donate to any thrift store
  • Fluorescent light bulbs can be recycled at the ARCC

Hazardous product containers – empty or almost empty 
  • Never mix bits of leftover hazardous material.  Don’t rinse out empty containers.
  • If almost empty, bring to a CVSWMD HHW collection.
  • In general, you can place empty HHW product containers, such as quart containers for (non-aerosol) automotive fluids and/or cleaners, in the trash.  If no more can be poured or used from the container – it is considered empty and therefore a solid waste (non-aerosol). Check out our What is Hazardous Waste? page if unsure.

Hearing Aids
  • Recycle unwanted or older hearing aids and assistive devices at the Starkey Hearing Foundation.  Securely package the donation and mail to: Hear Now, 6700 Washington Avenue South, Eden Prairie, MN 55344  Call 866-354-3254
  • Hearing aid batteries can be brought to the ARCC, 476-1900 *Please tape ends.

Helium Tanks
  • Wilson Depot - Barre 
  • ​Bring to ARCC up to 30lbs (fees apply)

Household cleaner packaging  (Spray triggers, pumps, detergent lids, etc)
Bring to the ARCC.

Hydraulic fluids
  • Bring to a Household Hazardous Waste collection.

Hypodermic needles/sharps
Needles, lancets and syringes used for home health care are not regulated and can go in the trash.  To protect workers in the waste industry, place all needles in a sealed container and label it “Sharps – Do Not Recycle.”  A hard plastic bottle, such as a laundry detergent bottle with a lid, makes a good container. Softer plastic, like water bottles, are not sufficient as needles can penetrate the plastic.

Ink Cartridges (see Toner Cartridges)

Irons
  • Bring to the ARCC,  476-1900
  • If the iron has a switch that shuts it off (tip switch) if it tips over then it is likely a mercury switch especially if it is a bit older.
  • If it doesn’t shut off if it tips over then it does not contain mercury. If no mercury, and is metal, scrap as metal. * See Appliances.
  • If it HAS mercury in it, then it has to be managed as a mercury containing device. And if it has a mercury switch – you can identify if the switch is mercury easily – glass (you’ll see it);  metal – rock it back and forth and you’ll feel the weight.

Jewel Cases (see also CD covers)
  • If the case contains, or is made of black plastic, it must be placed in the trash.
  • If they do not contain black plastic, CD & DVD jewel cases may be put in your blue bin for recycling​

Joint compound and spackling
Bring to a Household Hazardous Waste collection.

  • Bring to a Household Hazardous Waste collection.

Latex Paint
  • Take to the ARCC.
  • Both latex and acrylic paint are safe to go in the trash as long as the contents are completely dried up.  If there is a little bit in the can, take the lid off and let it air dry (keep away from children and pets).

Lead paint chips
  • Lead paint chips that have been scraped off wood siding, windows, furniture, etc are considered Household hazardous waste, and should be brought to a CVSWMD collection.

Light bulbs, incandescent
  • Broken or burned out incandescent bulbs can be placed in the trash.

Packing Materials 
Some office/mailing stores will take them for reuse.  Call your local store to find out.  They do not want hard blocks of Styrofoam, only peanuts.

Paint
Paint can now be recycled for free in Vermont. Click here to see a complete list of which paint products can and cannot be recycled.
  • Bring household paint year round to the ARCC. 
  • Go to PaintCare website for complete list of collection sites across the state.
  • ​Industrial/automotive paint must be disposed of at a Household Hazardous Waste collection.

Paint cans, empty
  • Clean, empty, dry paint cans may be recycled in with metals at the ARCC.
  • Empty oil based cans should go in the trash 
  • Empty plastic latex containers should go in the trash
  
Pallets
Pallets are made of both treated and untreated wood. Make sure you know what you have and separate out the treated from untreated. Untreated and safe for reuse or clean wood recycling will be marked with these codes: EPAL, HT, and DB. Treated pallets marked with one of these codes: MB, EUR, or painted or colored pallets.

  • Bring untreated to a Clean wood drop
  • Reuse pallets for stacking firewood off the ground.

Paper
  • Use both sides before recycling.
  • Shredded paper can be added to compost.
  • Documents can be brought to the ARCC to be shredded. Customers must place these in our secure shred drop-off containers.

Shredded paper does not meet the requirement that all recyclables be at least 2 inches by 2 inches in size. However, YOU CAN recycle it anyway but you must bag it first.
  • It is the ONLY recyclable that can/should be bagged. Put the bagged shredded paper in the recycling bin to recycle.

First we encourage you to reuse them, or use cloth bags; don’t use plastic bags in the first place.

Refrigerators and Freezers 
Refrigerators and freezers are among the category of materials called "white goods."  However, they also contain EPA regulated refrigerants and must be drained by a professional in order to be recycled for scrap metal.  Many transfer stations provide this service and will collect refrigerators and freezers at a cost to cover the removal of Freon from these appliances.

Shredded Paper​
Shredded paper does not meet the requirement that all recyclables be at least 2 inches by 2 inches in size. However, YOU CAN recycle it anyway but you must bag it first.

Smoke detectors
  • CVSWMD takes Smoke Detectors for safe recycling at the ARCC: fees apply. 
  • Smoke detectors often contain small amounts of a radioactive material. It poses little threat, but becomes a hazard if broken open.

Spray Cans
  • Aerosol spray cans that are hazardous (paints, pesticides) and should go to a household hazardous waste collection.

Styrofoam
  • Styrofoam is not recyclable in Vermont. It goes to the landfill.
  • Suggestions: don’t use Styrofoam cups – use reusable ones. 
  • Use alternatives to Styrofoam whenever possible, return Styrofoam packaging to the store where you purchased your packaged item.
  • Shipping businesses often take Styrofoam peanuts.

Twist Ties
​Bring to the ARCC to recycle in Small Metals collection.

Tyvek - DuPont Tyvek is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE).  It is not paper, but can be recycled for use in a variety of new products, including plastic lumber for picnic tables, park benches, construction fencing and also mud flaps. To recycle small quantities (less than 25 envelopes per month), turn any Tyvek envelope inside out, so the unprinted white surface shows on the outside. Stuff the inside-out Tyvek envelope with other used Tyvek envelopes for recycling. Address and mail the envelope to: Tyvek Recycle, 337A Industrial Drive, Petersburg, VA 23803. Clean Wood (no metal such as screws or nails), not painted, not pressure-treated lumber) is now banned from the landfill in Vermont. The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources provides information here. 

Other local options: 
  • Bring scrap lumber to the Vermont Granite Museum of Barre located at 27 Jones Brothers Way, Barre. If you have questions, call 802-476-4605 (museum) or visit www.vtgranitemuseum.org. Scrap lumber only, no pallets.
  • ​Myers Container Service recycles C&D materials, including shingles & clean wood. Call (802) 655-4312
  • ReSource in Barre accepts dimensional wood of at least 6 feet in length, call ahead 477-7800.
  • Check with your local "stump dump" for stumps & branches over 1" in diameter

  • Screws & Nails are OK in pallets ONLY, but metal straps are not accepted for any wood.

Wrapping paper
  • Use paper bags and newspaper, or reusable gift bags instead of wrapping paper.
  • To reuse wrapping paper, smooth out, fold up, and reuse.
  • Take bows and ribbons off and Recycle.
  • If wrapping paper has any type of foil, Mylar or plastic coating--put it in the trash. You can tell by pinching the edge of the paper and pulling it apart slightly. If you see plastic or foil, trash it.
  • Tape is okay to leave on!
