Membership Benefits

The Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District (CVSWMD) provides services to municipalities and the public focused on reducing and managing solid waste to protect public health and the environment. CVSWMD serves 19 member towns with over 53,000 residents. District membership allows towns to meet their statutory responsibility to have and implement an approved solid waste management plan, as required by the VT Agency of Natural Resources. Additionally, CVSWMD offers programs and services including:

Eco Depot Facility and Events: CVSWMD will once again accept electronics, household paint, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, mercury devices and other hard-to-recycle materials, as well as Hazardous Waste from residents and Very Small Quantity Generators, for which district members pay reduced prices. Our annual, localized HHW Collection Events are restricted to members only.

Disaster Related Debris and Hazardous Materials: CVSWMD helps towns identify appropriate sites and set up temporary collection/storage sites until materials can be safely relocated.

Outreach and Education: CVSWMD uses a website, social media accounts, newsletters, and a searchable A-to-Z Guide with information on landfill-banned items, composting, blue bin recycling, special recycling, household hazardous waste as well as regulations and program updates. We help businesses and schools improve waste management and chemical safety systems, directly supporting 40 district schools.

Facility and Hauler Services: CVSWMD provides safety and compliance technical assistance and training to solid waste facilities and haulers operating in the district. Our Civil Ordinance and licensing process provides guidance on landfill-banned, hazardous and recyclable waste and ensures safe operation and compliance with state laws, such as Act 148, VT’s Universal Recycling Law.

Waste Reduction Equipment: CVSWMD loans out Event Kits which include waste and recycling receptacles, dishes, flatware, drinkware, and linens to eliminate the use of their disposable counterparts. We provide compost and recycling equipment to members at discounts or for free, while supplies last.

Administrative Programming: CVSWMD offers grants for institutions and establishments for Green up Day, Organizational Waste Reduction and Reuse, Municipal Services, and Emergency Solid Waste Response.
