Membership Benefits
The Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District (CVSWMD) provides services to municipalities and the public focused on reducing and managing solid waste to protect public health and the environment. CVSWMD serves 19 member towns with over 53,000 residents. District membership allows municipalities to meet their statutory responsibility to have and implement an approved solid waste management plan, as required by the VT Agency of Natural Resources. Additionally, CVSWMD offers programs and services including:
Eco Depot: Located in Berlin, this CVSWMD-run facility accepts electronics, household paint, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, mercury devices, and other hard-to-recycle items. The Eco Depot also operates as a statewide, year-round, hazardous waste disposal facility. Members pay reduced fees for hazardous materials disposal.
Disaster Related Debris and Hazardous Materials: CVSWMD supports member municipalities to identify appropriate sites for temporary collection/storage of disaster-related materials, until they can be safely relocated for disposal. In the event of a disaster, CVSWMD can also provide operational materials (e.g. sandbags, haz waste category signage, and pallets) & facilitate collection and removal of disaster debris.
Outreach and Education: CVSWMD maintains a website, social media accounts, and a searchable A-to-Z guide with information on landfill-banned items, composting, blue bin recycling, special recycling, and household hazardous waste. We also email newsletters to communicate relevant information and program updates to residents. Our Outreach Program helps businesses & organizations improve their waste management systems. Our School Outreach Program supports 40 public and independent schools.
Facility and Hauler Services: CVSWMD staff provide technical assistance, focused on safety and compliance, to municipal and private solid waste facilities and waste haulers operating in our member towns. Our Civil Ordinance provides guidance on landfill-banned, hazardous and recyclable waste. Our annual licensing process ensures facilities and haulers operate safely and in compliance with state laws, such as Act 148, Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law.
Waste Reduction Equipment: CVSWMD loans out Event Kits which include waste and recycling receptacles, dishes, flatware, drinkware, and napkins to help reduce or eliminate the use of disposable event items.
Administrative Programming: CVSWMD administers grant programs for eligible property owners/renters, municipalities, schools & businesses/organizations. We also work with member municipalities on disaster debris planning and emergency response and addressing local solid waste issues. CVSWMD Management advocates with other waste districts for legislation related to ongoing and emergent solid waste challenges.
