Food Rescue and Donation Locations

Picture
Thinking about what you can do with still edible leftover food? Don't throw it out!  There are a number of organizations in central Vermont that can take your produce or pre-consumer (untouched, prepared, but not yet served) foods and provide them to hungry members of the community!

Please contact below organizations beforehand. See bottom of page for more resources.

When donating food, it is important to remember that the donation is for human consumption and needs to be handled accordingly. If food looks or smells bad, is moldy, or has damaged packaging do not donate it – compost it!

Resources and Law around donated food

Most types of food can be donated. There has NEVER been a lawsuit around food donations.

  • The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act provides protection from liability for the donation of food that is ‘apparently wholesome’ without visible quality issues.
  • This post from the USDA provides information about the Good Samaritan Act.
  • The Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic prepared a fact sheet regarding federal liability protection and tax incentives for food donation.

Donation Locations For Surplus School Food

Picture
Despite the best efforts of school food service departments to minimize food waste, there may be occasions when excess commodity inventories or surplus prepared foods are generated, both of which can potentially be donated to a local food pantry, soup kitchen or other outlet.

Listed below are organizations that can accept donations of school-generated surplus food. Please contact beforehand to work out details, including when they are open, whether they can accept your donation, how it will be transported to their location, etc.
Regional food pantries, food shelves, soup kitchens, etc., which can accept surplus food from schools:
