Food scraps are landfill-banned. There are several methods and resources to manage your food scraps.

Composting best practices and building plans. Bear smart protocols or contact helpful state biologists. Buy a Green Cone (for district residents only).

Food Scrap Haulers

Some haulers offer food scrap pick up. ​

Food Scrap Drop Off Sites
All Transfer Stations collect food scraps. Other Food Scrap Drop Off Sites feed make compost soil and/or feed layer hens.

Edible Food Donation
​
Edible, untouched food from events or restaurants/institutions can be donated, including produce and pre-consumer foods.

Community Composting
​Contained compost system for multiple families or other communities (school, garden, organization, etc.) with organizational structure (committee, manager, etc.)

Dead Animal Disposal

  1. Dead animals may be buried or composted on your property if you follow VT Solid Waste Management Management Rules (page 123) 802-828-1138.
  2. Farmers can bury or compost on your property following VT Agency of Ag guidelines (802) 241-3888.
  3. Take to a rendering company (large animals only) or a veterinarian.
  4. Contact the game warden (for road-kill).
  5. Double bag and bring it to a Transfer Station.
  6. Farmers with large quantities should contact VT ANR: (802) 241-3465.
